The most likely source is that it is an English metonymic occupational name for a maker or seller of gloves or may be a nickname for a wearer of particularly fine gloves, from the medieval English word "cuffe", glove. It may also be an Anglicized form of the Gaelic Mac Dhuibh, "son of the black one", from "dubh", dark, a nickname for a swarthy man or man of dark temperament. The Gaelic name "O'Doirin", male descendant of Doirin, a diminutive of "dorn", fist, cuff may also be a possible origin for the surname.Select Audience

Dannielle (Cuffe) Townsen
Hello! I was born a Cuffe, but am a Townsend by marriage. My father was Thomas Walter Leo Cuffe, my grandfather was Henry Levi Cuffe (this is also my brother's name), and my great grandfather was Patrick James Cuffe- born in Wicklow, Ireland around 1849-ish and immigrated to the USA in 1877. They settled in South Dakota which is where my grandfather and father were both born and died. My mother (Bonnie Lou Grosz Cuffe, my father's 2nd wife) my brother and myself now live in Washington state, as do our children (only one lives in Idaho) and grandchildren. The kids/grandkids surnames are Cuffe, Hall, Hetzler, and Townsend. Although my brother only has daughters so far, so I don't know how long the Cuffe Surname from my father will be passed on. I'd love to hear from any of you.
