SHERLOCK Family History
This name, with variant spelling Shurlock and Scurlock, derives from the Olde English pre 7th Century 'scir' meaning bright or fair, plus 'loc', a lock of hair, (medieval England 'Shirloc'), and was originally given as a nickname to one with bright shining hair. The surname is first recorded at the beginning of the 11th Century, (see below). One, Ralph Shirloic appears in the 1159 'Pipe Rolls of London'. The Sherlocks are now regarded as one of the great Anglo - Norman families of Ireland where they first established themselves following the Norman invasion of 1170. The family acquired large estates of land in Leinster, and in early Medieval records pertaining to County Meath various archaic spelling of the name are recorded, for example, Scurlok and Scherlog...Select Audience

Jean Sherlock Matheny
My maiden name is Sherlock. I live in Minnesota, where my Sherlock ancestors settled after a stint in New York. The Sherlocks who came from Ireland were Thomas Sherlock and his wife Hannorah (nee White). They camr from County Offaly, which was known as King's County then. Two of their sons had preceded them to New York; they were coming to join them with the rest of the family. Unfortunately Hannorah died on the ship, and Thomas died in New York ten days later. The family moved to Minnesota and their graves are in a cemetery connected to a small country church, St. John's, that they helped build. My parents bought the original homestead farm, and I grew up going to that little church, seeing my ancestors' names on the church windows. I am going to Ireland for the first time in October 2024 and would like to know if I still have relatives there.

My ancestor was Stephen Sherlock. He came from Waterford County during the Potato Famine.
Michael Sherlock
My great grandfather Peter J Sherlock came to the United States with his older brother Thomas Sherlock in 1890. I believe they were from Meath. Enfield possibly. Through family research and Ancestry. I believe their parents were Patrick Sherlock and Mary Smyth. They had three other children too. Michael, Jane, Patrick. I was hoping to find other Sherlockโs still in Ireland with a matched DNA but couldnโt find any. Very disappointing. I was hoping to find a direct link back to family in Ireland.

Michael, I wonder if we are distant cousins... all those names are grouped in my tree together as well. I haven't investigated Patrick Sherlock yet, so I'm not sure. But I haven't found a direct tie to anyone still in Ireland but it's a HUGE tree!! There are plenty of Sherlock's there though ...

I am trying to find my gg grandfather Mathew Sherlock from Doon, Kilfree, County Sligo. He was born in 1810 and transported to Australia for abduction in 1829. I do not have any other facts/records about his Irish heritage but lots of stuff from Australia.

Hello Sherlock family members! Am trying to find out more about Sherlocks in Ireland during the 1400s. I am descended from Catherine Sherlock who married Richard III O'Shee. Appreciate any resources you may have about that era and Catherine's heritage. Thank you in advance!
