DONOHOE Family History

Recorded in several spellings as shown below, this one of the most important and numerous of Irish surname. It derives form the Gaelic compound "Donncath" with donn meaning brown and chadha a warrior or fighter. As to who this "brown fighter" was has not been proven, but he may have been a monk or at least a holy man, and "warrior" may possibly have had a transfered meaning of one who fought (for instance) paganism. The original Gaelic spelling as O' Donnchadha is now found under various forms such as O' Donoghue, O' Donohue, Donohoe, Donohue, Donaghy and Donahue.

Patrick Donohoe married Bridget Burke both from Killimor Co Galway Ireland. Had children Matthew b.1835 and d.1905, Richard b.1838 and Catherine b.1841. Don't know anything about the last two. Think they might have gone to America any info please

I have a Mary Donohoe & also spelled Donohue as well as Danahoe when married to Patrick Scully in 1868 in St. Pauls Roman Catholic Church @ Congress & Court Streets Brooklyn NY Mary was born in Ireland in 1840 & immigrated to the USA (NY) in 1860. I've totally been unable to find out where she came from in Ireland as available records just do not seem to go that far back. So any Help would be greatly appreciated. Jim
