CANTWELL Family History
This interesting surname of English origin is a dialectal variant of the locational name Kentwell in Suffolk. It is not far from the Glem and may be an old name for this river. If so, the original name was Kennet deriving from the Old English pre 7th Century "cynete" plus "wella", "stream". This surname dates back to the late 13th Century, (see below). Further recordings include one Thomas Cantewell (1446), "The Close Rolls". Variations in the idiom of the spelling include Candwell, etc.. The church records at St. Giles, Cripplegate, London, include Cicily, daughter of Thomas Cantwell who was christened on March 13th 1568, and John, son of Arnold Cantwell who was christened on November 18th 1568...Select Audience

		CANTWELL

Gilbert de Cantwell arrived Ireland with Strongbow in 1170, subsequently joined by his brother Hugh/Hugo a few years later. They appear witnessing in deeds and titles several years later within the Earldom of Ormonde (Butler family) with whom they were close allies. They were origin within the de Conteville ambit of region in EURES Normandy & influence, Frodo (Kentwell) & Baldwin (Bury St Edmunds) where Muriel de Conteville is buried Suffolk England , having taken lands from Intermarriage with mainly Purcells, Shortalls and Archers within the following 2 centuries. The coat of arms is a close derivative of the de Conteville coat of arms and therefore related to William the conqueror in half sibling line. In Normandy they were probably of initial Viking groups which raided there from Norway. Being elated to William the Conqueror, means they may have been distantly related to Rollo Lodbrok Sigurdsson though there is no evidence to support this.

Michael Cantwell was born ireland 1845 to John
Cantwell. He was married 1867 to Mary Hurley in
Pennydaren Wales and came to Washington County PA
Where they reared a large family.
The family began using surname Campfield as do all descends. We believe
Mary Hurley was from Cork Ireland and know her father was Denis Hurley.
Sligo Ireland was said to be someoneโs place of ancestry - probably Michael Cantwell
